Marylanders 50 & Older Invited To Participate

senior olympicsSixty events with 19 sports will be featured at the 2009 Summer Maryland Senior Olympics from Aug. 22 to Nov. 1, 2009. The line dancing competition will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 29 at the South County Senior Activity Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater. The event is supported by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.

The sports competition also includes swimming, track and field, archery, badminton, basketball, billiards, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, racquetball, running, shuffleboard, softball, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. Events also are scheduled in Boyds, Cambridge, Columbia, Eldersburg, Ellicott City, Gaithersburg, Landover, Laytonsville, Olney, Parkton, Rockville, and Silver Spring.

Competition will be conducted in Men’s and Women’s Divisions in various age groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, and 95 plus. If participant numbers are insufficient, age groups may be combined for competition purposes. Medals will be awarded within each division and age category for the top three finishers, with ribbons for fourth-to-sixth place finishers. Age is determined as of Dec, 31, 2009.

Participation is open only to Maryland residents, with residency defined as anyone age 50 or older who lives, works, or owns property in Maryland.
