The Capital’s Editor Explainswhome

It seems that The Capital has a new monthly column, where the Editor, Tom Marquardt lays ink to paper and attempts to explain his way out of some crazy decision made by The Capital. This Sunday’s column was a perfect example.

Apparently, The Capital took some heat on running an article on Sam Shropshire’s past divorce proceedings. Marquardt’s lead in comment was particularly amusing

Readers judge us only by what they see in the newspaper – not by what we see that never makes it into print. This skews impressions about whether we are unfair, biased or sensational.

He has it all backwards. Perhaps if the paper was more forthcoming with what “never makes it to print”, there might not be such a perception of The Capital being “unfair,” “biased,” or “sensational.” And let’s be real here, perception IS reality.  Newspapers (and blogs) know this and as much as they try to portray this completely unbiased opinion, it is nothing but bunk.

By the end of his commentary, he get’s down to the real reason why The Capital went with the story. They had been scooped by The Baltimore Sun! Of course, the rationale for running the story was that there was a letter sent to the editor asking him to publish it. Well, there are thousands of letters that are not published. And according to the policy immediately above his “explanation” it states:

The Capital does not publish letters that are libelous, in bad taste or part of an organized letter-writing campaign.

Well, I guess that is up for interpretation!

Porn In The Paper

On July 6th, we were the first to comment that The Capital may have jumped the shark by accepting ads for sexual enhancement. Not small ads, but huge quarter page ads…two of them! Well, as suspected, it did not take long for the readers to complain. According to Marquardt’s column, he too was surprised at the advertisements (ok, here they are if you missed them). When The Capital outsourced the printing, did they also outsource the editing and publishing? He is the EDITOR AND PUBLISHER! How could he not know that these ads were running. He goes on to say that his sales representative did not understand that The Capital was not a “big city” paper. Did we outsource the sales department as well?

We talk about spin typically coming from politicians, but it seems The Capital has also taken some lessons. Instead of the monthly “we made a mistake but it wasn’t our fault” column, how about a refreshing one called “Man, did we ever screw up!”? What ever happened to the days of “the buck stops here”? Now we are firmly operating in days of “the buck passes here.”
