County Police Shoot Man In Arnold

What is happening? Are the police a little trigger happy? Are citizens a little too much on the edge? This is the fourth police involved shooting for Anne Arundel County since April. First the guy in Severn, then the guy in  Hanover, then the kid in Laurel, and now a man in Arnold. Two of these have been fatal shootings.  While the job of a police officer is stressful and life and death decisions need to be made in an instant (in some cases), four shootings in 3 months seems to be high.

From the Anne Arundel County Police Department:

On July 12, 2009, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to 1026 Deep Creek Avenue in Arnold for a check subject at the request of the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the husband and advised that they were there to check on the status of his wife. The husband did not comply, became belligerent with the presence of the officers and demanded that the officers leave the residence. He assaulted both officers. At one point, he grabbed a wooden, dining room chair and raised it over the head of one of the officers, who was on the floor. Fearing that the officer was in imminent danger of serious injury, the other officer fired his service weapon and struck the assailant, which ended the attack.

The suspect was taken via ambulance to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with non-life threatening injuries. Both officers sustained minor injuries during the incident and were treated and released from Anne Arundel Medical Center. Police have filed charges of 2nd Degree Assault (2 counts), Failure to Obey Lawful Order and Resisting Arrest.

Suspect: Michael Anthony Housley, 51, of 1026 Deep Creek Avenue, Arnold, MD.

    Wow. I was pumping gas at the Macey’s Corner Exxon in SP when I saw four cop cars…SCREAMING down Richie Hwy south toward Arnold…at around 8:30 pm. It was impressive! These guys had to be going over 90mph. The engines on these things where roaring. If people weren’t a**hats when it comes to cops…they wouldn’t have to use force. My only “hmmm” moment is why don’t they use tasers? The guy was threatening the cops with a chair. A jolt of 50,000 volts will take care of that threat pretty quick.

    I totally agree…..even if you are not doing anything and a cop tells you to do something–do it!

    But I too question the use of lethal force. What’s the worst that could happen with multiple cops and one guy with a chair? I think we need more use of the tasers and see where that goes.

    In the Hanover shooting, yes the guy was threatening the person, and he was a bad guy for sure, but I am just wondering if an earlier shot to the leg may have been the way to go?

    I remember many years ago there was a jumper on the 495 bridge over the Potomac. Traffic was halted in both directions for 4 hours. Do the math! While the police talked this guy down. My thought, walk up to the unarmed guy when you have some boats positoned and give him a shove and get the traffic moving–it was only a 70 foot fall so nothing typically lethal.

    LOL! I was stuck in that mess many years ago. I use to work in Crystal City and left for home. I left the office at 5:00. Didn’t step foot in my house in Annapolis until 10:30. I was pissed…so where others calling into WTOP. Many where shouting for him to jump and get it over with. I think in that case they used non-lethal bean bags. Ahhhh…the memories!
