BGE Turning Off 70,000

bgelogoBGE Begins Their Turn Off Blitz

Baltimore Gas And Electric will be busy for the next few weeks turning off power to the 74,000 Marylanders who have fallen behind on their bills.

As a result of regulation wrangling, BGE was required to contact “at risk” accounts and make arrangements to get the past due bills resolved. These 74,000 represent the customers who they were unable to contact.  However, there is still help available.

There are several state programs that can assist with your BGE bill including Fuel Fund of Maryland (410-821-3022), the Electric Universal Service Program (800-352-1446), and the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (800-352-1446). There are different requirements for each program, but in order to receive any benefit, you need to contact them.  It is not too late if you are facing a turn off.

However, as Legum’s New Line has pointed out, when you have 74,000 people unable to afford electricity; it is indicative of a much larger problem that needs more than a cursory overview.

Remember, over the past year, we have seen incredible increases in our electric rates–is it any wonder why people are behind?
