Sam’s on the Waterfront Hosts Fundraising Music Festival to Commemorate Historic Carr’s Beach
In the time of segregation, Carr’s Beach was a place for day camps and church picnics during the week, but on the weekends it was a major stop on what became known as the “Chitlin Circuit”. By 3:00 Sunday afternoon thousands of people would flock to the beach to see stars like James Brown, Ray Charles, Bill Doggett, Little Richard, The Shirelles, The Pipe Dreamers, The Drifters, The Coasters, and many more greats of that era.
The Carr’s Beach Historic Music Festival will be an annual event which will raise money for two extremely important local charities. The first is the We Care & Friends, which provides over three thousand people each year with thanksgiving dinner and also supplies over one thousand toy bags annually for needy children. They also provide shelter referrals, family, marital, and domestic violence counseling and food and clothing distribution. The second charity is Annapolis Youth Services Bureau, which is dedicated to serving as a positive force in improving the lives and well-being of children in Annapolis. They provide youth and family oriented comprehensive professional services for positive family interaction and general prevention of juvenile delinquency.
This is the first year for the event, which will take place Sunday, June 28th from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sam’s on the Waterfront in Annapolis, MD. Music will be provided by The Pipe Dreamers and The Legends (both of whom headlined at Carr’s Beach in the past) along with Mama Jama, Dean Rosenthal and The Clones of Funk. Ticket prices will be $20 with a Rain Date of July 12th.
