Jesse,

Right on about the SP guy. He is a Secret Service agent for the pres. What is sad in all of this..apparently he has been receiving threatening calls and letters by irate neighbors due to the fact this guy "carried" the flu to Maryland. People need to act like grown ups for once. Very sad.

Yes, I was reading about Mexican culture today -- apparently, they only have half of the beds per capita that we do. As a population, they also tend to self-treat first with drugs (do not need prescription in Mexico as we all know), then go to a doctor (sometimes weeks later) and then finally to a hospital. While we are quick to get to the doctor, they are not. That makes perfect sense now.

I loved the write up in The Capital where they interviewed the family who essentially said it was like another other flu or cold they've had.

I also only learned today that the SP guy is the same guy from the Obama administration. It all makes sense now.

Eye...right on with your facts. Youngest son goes to Folger and said many of his friends stayed home. It was mass hysteria in SP yesterday. Level heads are prevailing today.

Apparently the attendance at the two affected schools in MD was about 60%. Montgomery County has closed one as a precaution today (5/1/09). From my understanding, the kid in AA was infected by his father and never attended the school while symptomatic, so closing the school would be like closing the supermarket where he was the week before.

Deaths? The likely cause of death (totally my opinion) is the lack of top notch medical care in Mexico and the conditions of life in the affected cities. The one death in the US was a Mexican boy who came to Texas for treatment. One does not know the conditions or how far along the flu went without treatment in Mexico.

So here are my questions, since you are keeping on the tippy top of this thing:

1) Why wouldn't they close certain schools in MD if they think there are cases? Sure, nobody has been hospitalized, but if they give it to someone with a compromised immune system, that person very well could be.

2) What are the criteria for being one of the unlucky ones that die? Is it the strand, or just someones own reaction to the virus?

There is so much noise about this that I cannot tell right from wrong. I read that Mexico had something like 2,500 cases, when a unbiased organization (iJet) says it is much less.

In other news, I saw a funny tweet today. It said something like "People said we'd have a black President when pigs fly. Obama has 100 days in office and we have swine flu."

Speaking of our President, one of his aides contracted swine flu while in Mexico on official U.S. business. He has assured officials that he has not been within 6 feet of the President since that trip.

I waited my whole life to have someone like Obama in office. Nothing better happen to him!
