Brannon Joel Powell, Charged With Sexual Assault in Crofton, MD
What is happening to sleepy little Cofton? First we have the David Raszewski rape of a 7 year old, and now a woman who was selling newspapers door to door was sexually assaulted. Maybe it is time that the Anne Arundel Police and the Crofton Police put their heads together and figure a way to stop this alarming trend.
According to Anne Arundel County Police, On Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at approximately 5:15pm, officers from the Western District responded to the 1000 block of Chilmark Court in Crofton and spoke with the 18-year-old old female victim, who advised that she had been selling newspapers door to door. The victim reported that she was invited into a residence, where she was forced to perform a sexual act on the resident. The victim then ran to a house in the neighborhood and requested police assistance.
As a result, Brannon Joel Powell, 29, of 1013 Chilmark Court, Crofton, Maryland, was arrested and charged with Second, Third, and Fourth Degree Sex Offenses and Second Degree Assault and is being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center on $1,500,000 bond .
Even more disturbing is that Brannon Joel Powell is an employee of the District of Columbia Public Schools. His primary job is a staff professional development instructor and his contact with children is minimal. The District of Columbia Public Schools has been notified of his arrest.

I don’t know what is happening in Crofton, but as a life-long resident of this wonderful place to live the recent sexual violence is pissing me off. I’m going to {Hey, would you kiss your mother with that mouth?} Mr. Powell up if I ever see him.

Well if you want to f*** him up, he’s out on bond and living at the same house, walking with his 2 year old child and pregnant wife up and down the street. Makes me sick…

i know this guy, not the first time he did stuff like this. (allegedly). what do you think will happen, its crapy for the girl involved. we are far away from whats going on up there.

It is obvious that he is sick and needs lots of therapy. I think is ignorant for everyone to place all of the blame on him, she is 18 years old does she not have a brain? Why did she go into a stranger’s home anyway? There is really no need to perpetuate the cycle of violence and do harm to him or his family, it’s not going to solve anything. What everyone should be doing is praying for both families that this nightmare is over very soon.
You make a valid point and certainly there ought to have been some instructions–like never go into a home. And she is 18 and at that age I might suggest a bit naive that all people are good.

These are the facts: 1) We have a well educated man 2) No Prior Record 3) Nice Car & Clothes (based on a what I’ve been told) 4) Has a family But 5) a female of legal age is in the neighborhood soliciting $$ & Voluntarily enters his home THEN yells assuault. THIS IS FISHY & I’ve talked to many people. Also, he probably was making almost six-figures so he is gonna have the best attorney available. Mark my words, this will end in Not Guilty or Plea with a misdemeanor & fine.

This seems to be taking forever so both sides are probably “giving a little”. On one hand Mr. Powell has to know that he placed himself in a bad position with his family and other wise. However, he is someone who is an outstanding citizen, probably has many many people to confirm that and has never had any brush with the law (you cant as a school administrator). On the other hand the prosecution has to know that he is someone of instant credibilty to a jury and WHO KNOWS what type of person the “victim” is. Being that they dont publish info. She could be someone with a checkered past (criminal record, vindictive, upset etc) which the prosectution knows is very tough sell on the stand against a highly regarded person. I am justpraying for ALL in the situation.
