We all know the problems associated with smoking. Several years ago, many states banned smoking in public spaces and Maryland went right along with it. I am in favor of it and my nights in the various bars in Annapolis are much more pleasant.
Now, it seems that Montgomery County Senator Mike Lennett wants to prevent you from smoking in your car. Lennet is sponsoring a bill that would fine people $50 for smoking in the car when young children are present. The bill also applies to passengers in the car (fine goes to the driver) and only when children are under eight years old.
From a health standpoint, we need to be looking after our kids and this bill probably makes sense. But from a sense of freedom, not so much. If we start legislating smoking in our cars, can a ban on smoking in our homes be far behind? And at that point, will the government be legislating everything we do publicly or privately? This is a very slippery slope.
