Anne Arundel Executive Eliminating 100 Vacant Positions

John Leopold has announced that he plans to save $5.7 million dollars in this year’s budget by eliminating 100 already vacant positions in County government. While it is a start, there is still a long way to go to ease the County’s $150 million dollar deficit.

In a prepared statement released Thursday afternoon, Leopold said,

“This administration has taken steps to cut spending in anticipation of the downturned economy. Now that our fiscal situation has worsened, we hope to avoid layoffs and dramatic cuts to service. Hopefully, these savings derived from hard choices early on will pay dividends.”

Leopold is preparing a budget to be presented to the County Council on May 1, 2009. It appears that any political fallout from the mystery surrounding his parking lot predilections has evaporated.

John Leopold. He’s a superhero according to some. Despite layoffs in these tough economic times, he’s talking about acquiring land for a public boat ramp. Yep, what a shrewd and fiscal conservative Anne Arundel Republicans have here. It’s amazing how so many have overlooked his big government tendencies. Of course, he’s a honorable man that sits quietly by himself in the backseat of a dark parking lot working for the good of the county. I mean, what’s so suspicious about that?
