Annapolis Facebook Race

| March 16, 2009 at 8:10 pm

While some candidates have not really established their websites yet (Cohen), and others have not even formally declared their intentions (Pierre and Fox), they certainly are working behind the scenes on Facebook to gather up some supporters. I guess the message about social media, blogging and the Barack Obama experience fell on some ears that were listening.

So, who is winning the race for Mayor of Annapolis according to Facebook Friends? In no particular order as of this posting:

Wayne Taylor and Gilbert Renaut seem to be missing from the Facebook crowd; but it seems that if we held the election on Facebook, Chris Fox would have an 8% lead on Josh Cohen.  Do you have a favorite? Why not click on the link and become a friend!

Now I guess the real question is who are the Twitterers and who are they tweeting?

Thanks for keeping up on these issues. However, one has to wonder just how many of the friends on facebook are simply “friends” versus actual VOTERS. How many actual Annapolitan voters are on facebook and what percentage of the candidate’s friends are Annapolitans?

If you look through each of the candidate’s sites and friends, a majority of the friends are not even in Annapolis. They seem like college friends who live outside of Annapolis. So sheer number of friens is irrelevant.

I’d be curious to know your analysis from that point of view. I think THAT is much more relevant. Quality versus quantity. It seems as if this upcoming generation is more interested in Quantity than quality. We deserve a quality candidate. Not a quantity candidate.

You are absolutely correct. There is no scientific backing or any analysis at all. But, I find it interesting to note how important social networking (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Blogs, etc) were to the last presidential race–and then look to the local level and see what candidates are embracing it–or not.
